A Class 12 student died after allegedly setting herself ablaze on her school’s premises in East Delhi on Saturday.
During the investigation at Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya in Shahdara, police recovered a three-page note from the student’s school bag.
The body of the deceased teenager was found in an area behind the school’s security room. Initial investigations suggest that she may have used a petrol-like substance to set herself on fire. Police suspect suicide, although the circumstances leading to her death are yet to be established.
In a statement, the DCP said the circumstances surrounding the incident were being examined and further investigation was underway.
Police are examining the three-page note and other items recovered from the scene to determine the circumstances leading to the incident. Teachers reportedly alerted the police after suspicious items were found. A police crime team is inspecting the scene and collecting evidence.
According to a statement by the deceased student’s sister, the teenager had left for school cheerfully earlier that day.
“I don’t know what happened,” she said, adding that the family received a call from the school at around 1.40 pm.
Further details are awaited.
