According to India’s National Centre for Seismology, a fresh earthquake of magnitude 4.5 hit China’s Tibet Autonomous Region in the early hours of Saturday. The tremors originated at a depth of 10 kilometres, the National Centre for Seismology said.

The latest seismic activity comes nearly 30 hours after a strong earthquake of magnitude 7 rattled Tibet on Thursday, October 2022, claiming nearly 16 lives. According to Chinese state media, hundreds of homes collapsed due to the tremors, leaving behind a trail of destruction. The powerful earthquake struck Nagqu, a city in Tibet.

Authorities assessing the situation have evacuated residents as a precaution against possible collapses caused by aftershocks or further disruption. The earthquake was the strongest since the previous major one in January 2024.

More than 300 police officers, including community police personnel, were deployed for rescue operations.

Relief supplies were also dispatched to the affected region, including 2,000 prefabricated housing units, approximately 3,400 tents and 2,000 folding beds. Flashlights and winter clothing were also sent.
