Union Home Minister Amit Shah paid tribute to the police personnel who sacrificed their lives in the service of the nation at the National Police Memorial in New Delhi on the occasion of Police Commemoration Day today, Wednesday. He also flagged off a nationwide motorcycle rally carrying the message “Fight Against Drugs”.

Other dignitaries included Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, Intelligence Bureau Director Mahir Dixit and senior officers of the Central Armed Police Forces.

Addressing the gathering, Shah said that the sacrifice of police personnel had helped India establish a position in the world by protecting national security and safeguarding the country’s borders.

Recalling the events of October 21, 1959, when ten CRPF personnel were killed while confronting Chinese forces at Hot Springs in Ladakh, he described 2026 as a significant year for India, police personnel, the CRPF, the CoBRA battalion and the Chhattisgarh Police for their role in countering left-wing extremism.

He also highlighted the National Police Memorial, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2018, as a place of remembrance for police personnel who sacrificed their lives for the nation.

Besides, he emphasised the security forces’ contributions to maintaining law and order, securing elections and protecting democratic processes.

According to Amit Shah, the Centre has made immense progress in addressing three long-standing internal security challenges: Jammu and Kashmir, the Northeast and areas affected by left-wing extremism.

He also called for a coordinated national campaign against narcotics, setting December 31, 2029, as the target for freeing the nation from the drug menace.

He urged police forces to implement the government’s Nasha Mukt Bharat roadmap, noting that drug trafficking can harm young people, burden the economy and finance criminal and anti-national activities.

The motorcycle rally will converge at Ikkanagar, Gujarat, for a parade.
