CM Mohan Yadav has played a major role in the conservation movement with the release of eight wild buffaloes at the Supkhar enclosure at Kanha Tiger Reserve, Balaghat district.

Once the males and females had finished their first soft release and were quarantined, they were officially transferred to the larger enclosure. The state government estimated that the wild buffaloes had vanished from Madhya Pradesh about 100 years ago and thus the initiative was a significant measure to help bring the wild buffalo back to the region.

On April 28, 2026, eight buffaloes were transported from Kaziranga National Park, Assam, to Kanha Tiger Reserve. Upon arrival they were provided with initial care and health checks before being placed in the soft-release area.

Chief Minister Yadav called the step a historic milestone of action for the wildlife and forest ecosystems conservation in the state. Investigating the possibility of re-introducing wild buffaloes can help in managing the grassland resources at Kanha and also help in bringing about greenerening of the region, he added.

The project also looks forward to fostering tourism opportunities for wildlife where they can provide jobs for youth and contribute to economic growth of communities.

However, Yadav noted the efforts that are being undertaken by the state toward conservation, including the reintroduction of cheetahs in India in 2022, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He also spoke about conservation efforts in Kuno National Park, Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary, Veerangana Durgavati Tiger Reserve at Nauradehi.

The state government was working on building infrastructure infrastructure and efforts to strengthen the natural ecosystem, he said.

The wild buffalo removal initiative is another such initiative to boost the wildlife population and enhance ecosystem management in Madhya Pradesh. It will require ongoing monitoring, appropriate management of the habitat and proper protection of the birds for future success.
