The Centre on Monday shrewd about the appointment of three Chiefs Justices of High Courts to serve in the Supreme Court of India. The appointments will make the Supreme Court size at 37 from 34 judges when the first one has been added.
The three how appointed Supreme Court judges in the notification by the Department of Justice are Justice Sunita Agarwal of the Gujarat High Court, Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court and Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh of Telangana High Court.
The appointments have been made by President of India as per the constitution powers.
The Collegium of the Supreme Court had recommended the names of the three judges on September 28. It is subsequently that they were informed by the Centre where they are to be appointed after they were sworn into serve in the country’s apex court.
Justice Sunita Agarwal has been sitting as the Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court and Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya presided over the Delhi High Court. Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh is a Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court.
Once the three have sworn to the office, the Supreme Court will have 37 judges. At present, the court has a sanctioned strength of 38 judges, comprising the Chief Justice of India and Court Judge.At present the court has 38 sanctioned judges – including Chief Justice of India and Court Judge.
With the recent amendment of the Supreme Court, the sanctioned strength for the Supreme Court is now raised to 38 as per Supreme Court Amendment Act, 2026 from 34. Increased sanctioned strength by four positions from the pre-expansion number.
The recent appointments make it clear that the Supreme Court is tending to the post-filling of court staffing in a sanctioned strength in an unprecedented manner. The 3 new judges will assume the role upon the formal ‘Oath-taking ceremony’.
The moves also signalled a change of leadership at the Gujarat High Court, Delhi High Court and Telangana High Court with changes likely to come in place after the appointment.
