The Bharatiya Janata Party’s Central Election Committee (CEC) has cleared Debasish Sharma as the party’s contender for the forthcoming Lok Sabha by-election to be held in Assam’s Nagaon district. Sharma has been announced by the BJP via a press release from its central offices on Friday as the party ramp up for the by-election Election Day.
The election for election to Nagaon Lok sabha division is slated on 6 October 2026 while votes are being counted on 9 October 2026, according to the Election Commission of India.
Former Nagaon district commissioner and administrative officer Sharma joined the BJP recently go along with the journalist Sunil Lenin Saurav Bora and Gunjan Kalita. The three formally joined the party during a ceremony at the BJP Assam Pradesh headquarters in Vajpayee Bhawan in Basistha on Tuesday.
Several senior BJP leaders along with Assam’s party president and member of the Assam assembly Dilip Saikia attended the event of induction ceremony. Sharma has just come out of a period of active politics and his nomination as the party’s candidate has come at a pivotal time.
Meanwhile several Assam BJP leaders will attend various meetings of the bureau members on Friday in the Assam capital Guwahati, discussing organizational and electoral preparations.
The meeting will address various issues, such as the upcoming campaign, Seva Sankalp (mid September to mid October). Pulak Gohain, BJP’s MLAs said the campaign would be dedicated to many such points. The details of the programme and its activities will be discussed by the party leaders in detail, along with preparations for the Silchar Municipal Corporation elections and Nagaon by-election.
The party will also keep on Assam by-election as its focus, said Ashok Singhal, Assam minister.
The BJP’s campaign and organisation will now ramp up in the Nagaon area ahead of the election in October.
