A Jeddah-bound Malaysia Airlines aircraft from Kuala Lumpur made an emergency landing at Chennai Airport on Monday evening following reports of a technical issue involving engine number 2.
Malaysia Airlines flight MH156, operated by an Airbus A330-200 registered as 9M-MYT, was carrying 186 people on board when it declared a full emergency while approaching Chennai Airport at 4:17 p.m. IST. The aircraft was scheduled to arrive at 4:40 p.m. but landed at 4:44 p.m.
The aircraft was assigned Bay 45, with emergency response arrangements activated at the airport.
According to an official statement by Chennai Airport authorities, the aircraft was diverted to Chennai Airport, the nearest suitable airport, following a failure of engine number two.
The technical issue involving the aircraft is being assessed by the airline and the relevant technical teams.
No injuries have been reported, and all 186 people on board the aircraft were safely evacuated.
