Dhanendra Sahu raises concerns over UCC, Education and Water Conservation in Chhattisgarh

The tension over the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) has even grown in Chhattisgarh where former Congress president of the state Dhanendra Sahu expressed concern over community-specific customs and traditions it could impact.

Sahu added that each segment in the society has its own tradition, customs and practice which needs proper respect. Moreover, he mentioned the concern he had about the live-in relationship and the need for responsibility and awareness over issues related to the situation. The government should “take into cognisance directions of Supreme Court and High Courts and do some balancing before taking any decision on the UCC,” he said.

On the state’s Master Plan, Sahu said plans over 2022 had been initiated but the plan was not put into action for various reasons. He further said that the discussions for a Capital Complex and metro service between Raipur and Rajnandgaon were kept on hold.

Sahu questioned government as to the issue of education as thousands of schools were being shut down, while over one lakh teachers were left languishing in the job with no work. He revealed that the government had only secured 50,000 teachers which has not been matched with recruitment, and had deceived young people who had lost employment.

Addressing criticism by the BJP on the training programme being run by the Congress, Sahu claimed that his party’s organisation was on the path of strengthening under the Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan and training was being imparted to the district and block-level presidents.

He also defied the government over its record in water conservancy in Chhattisgarh, which the government had called commendable, declaring the numbers as “bogus” and demanded the government to present any real project. Sahu dubbed the BJP and RSS as “severe casteist” in Congress-adverse BJP posters, and stated that the ruling party is worried about Congress’ rising popularity.
