At the young age of 15, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is making his way into the pages of cricket history. The teenage opening batter achieved another remarkable milestone during the ongoing Duleep Trophy semifinal between East Zone and defending champions Central Zone.
Sooryavanshi now joined a list that was over 57 years old, and is the youngest batsman to score half a century in Duleep Trophy play. The youngster represented East Zone quite well and reached his half-century in just 42 deliveries, during which he hit five fours and three sixes.
Sooryavanshi, who was appointed as the regular captain Ishan Kishan’s replacement on Sunday, looked to be in sterling form when he came on the bow on Monday as the East Zone battered at the wicket. He was within his reach ever again to an other historic achievement in view of his aggressive style of play.
After the young batter finally got himself sorted, he was eventually run out with 92 runs and was just eight runs off the mark to become the youngest centurion in Duleep Trophy history. Although he wasn’t able to cross the three-figures mark, the innings were another chapter of his very promising career.
Sooryavanshi made history four years later, at 15 years and 157 days, coming up one day earlier than the previous mark.Sooryavanshi came up four days in front of the previous record if it is compared with another known player Laxman Singh. Singh’s 50 was the first of his Duleep Trophy career at 16 years and 23 days – more than 50 years ago, and to this day his record stands untouched.
The next on the list is Piyush Chawla, completing fifty in Duleep Trophy at his age of 16 years and 307 days.
Sooryavanshi is always creating history with his keenness to emerge in the sport like a lion and his second title came just in a matter of time. His unbeatable form and the way he performs for quality home opposition is yet good reason enough to consider him as one of the best Indian talent.
