Heavy rains battered parts of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Monday morning, slowing traffic in several areas.
Parts of South Delhi and nearby regions witnessed intense showers, while the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued red and orange alerts for heavy rainfall across several districts. Thunderstorms, lightning and winds gusting at 30 to 40 kilometres per hour are also expected in parts of the city.
In its advisory, the IMD said heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds is very likely at isolated places in Southeast Delhi, East Delhi, Shahdara, Central Delhi, Northeast Delhi, South Delhi, New Delhi, Southwest Delhi, West Delhi, Northwest Delhi and North Delhi.
The weather department also forecast moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms in several parts of the city.
According to the forecast, scattered spells of heavy rain accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of up to 25 kilometres per hour are likely in parts of Ghaziabad, East Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Delhi and South Delhi, along with nearby areas, over the next two hours.
Minimum temperatures are expected to remain hot and humid after the rain subsides.
Waterlogging and traffic snarls were reported in several areas, with residents taking to social media to share their experiences. Following heavy rain in Ghaziabad, traffic slowed significantly, leading to congestion and several reports of waterlogging.
