Yashasvi Jaiswal’s dismissal became the major talking point on the opening day of India’s second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo after the Indian batter was involved in a heated exchange with Sri Lankan pacer Asitha Fernando.
The incident took place while India was in their 17th over. Jaiswal had responded to Fernando’s short delivery after a sequence of three consecutive boundaries but then the strike had a narrow miss. Jaiswal got an inside edge onto his stumps and was dismissed.
This changed following the wicket, though. As the Sri Lankan players celebrated, Yashasvi Jaiswal walked straight back to the pavilion and came towards Fernando. The two players got head-to-head but luckily Dhananjaya de Silva, Sri Lanka’s skipper, stepped in to separate them.
This incident may lead up to some disciplinary action taken by the International Cricket Council (ICC). Inappropriate physical contact with players or other match participants is covered by Clause 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct and Clause 2.13 deals with personal abuse in an international match.
In light of the nature of the confrontations, any action would most likely be regarded as a Level 1 offence, if not a Level 2. The penalties include: official warning, up to 50% of a player’s match fee.
Everything that happened could then be reviewed and both Jaiswal and Fernando could be bound to come under the spotlight of the game officials.
