The condition of schools managed by the government in Rajasthan has been brought into limelight following a report to the Assembly on Friday by the state government that 611 schools in the State are running without their own school buildings.
The Leader of Opposition Tika Ram Jully had raised a question to which the disclosure was given. Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE) for 2025-26 under Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan reveals that 611 Rajasthan government schools lack specific buildings.
The problems are coming at the time when people are once again raising concerns about state’s government schools’ infrastructure and safety. The BJP-led government in the state also pointed out the school infrastructure shortcomings on the basis of an audit carried out after the school accident in Jhalawar and accused Ashok Gehlot’s previous Congress government of being responsible for the problems.
In July last year, the roof of a school building collapsed killing at least seven students and injuring 28 others while they were attending morning prayers.
The government has termed the dismal health of government schools an outcome of “previous administration” and noted that steps were being taken to fulfil its shortcomings.
The disclosure also follows a controversy over the alleged attack on the volunteers of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), who were reportedly conducting check-up on infrastructure and facilities at government schools.
The incident occurred in the Rampura Kanwarpura village of Bagru Assembly constituency in Jaipur. CJP co-convenor Ashutosh Ranka and his team were allegedly on a tour, during which they were attacked, of a government school.
One of the volunteers sustained a broken arm, says Ranka, and pointed out that the people in involved were employees of the ruling Bharatiya Janata party.
With the latest data, the situation of basic infrastructure in government schools of Rajasthan has again come under scrutiny, raising concerns regarding availability of the schools, students’ safety and facilities.
