Ajit Agarkar’s future as India’s chief selector has reportedly come under uncertainty despite expectations that the BCCI would extend his tenure until the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Agarkar’s current term will expire next month. The recent ICC success, such as India winning the T20 World Cup, under his leadership, elevated his stature, but recent speculation surrounding Rohit Sharma’s retirement has muddied the waters.
Reports indicate that the doubts surrounding Rohit’s future and the mixed signals being sent out by the BCCI have raised doubts about Agarkar’s future. The matter was brought up when rumours of his retirement suddenly broke, which were dismissed by Rohit after breaking a record of his own, with a century in the next ODI against his prototypical domestic rivals, England.
This report alleges that the incident “has made the situation difficult” for Agarkar. His initial contract expired in June but the BCCI extended his contract for a period of three months. But now the board is considering their options before determining what to do.
Former India batsman VVS Laxman is said to be in contention as the preferred candidate to replace Ajit Agarkar. Laxman is currently the head of the Centre of Excellence (CoE) of BCCI and is considered for the appointment to become the chief selector of BCCI.
According to sources, the talks are still in their early stages, and the final decision has not been made. The issue will be considered by the BCCI at its Annual General Meeting (AGM) to be held in September.
