PM Modi praised the weightlifting champion Mirabhai Chanu for her historic victory clinching gold in women’s 48kg weightlifting event in Glasgow on Sunday.
She first broke the record in snatch with a brilliant 85kg attempt and then followed it up with a 105kg attempt in clean and jerk taking her total to an impressive 190kg. This is her third gold at the Commonwealth Games and India’ first gold at Commonwealth Games this year. With this victory, Chanu is now part of an elite club becoming the only third Indian athlete after Sushil Kumar and Vinesh Phogat to win three back-to-back Commonwealth Games gold medals. She had previously won the gold medal in 2018 and 2022.
In a post game briefing, Chanu said – “I feel very good. This is my third gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. I am extremely happy. I can’t express how happy I am to win my third gold medal. I am proud that I did it for India and the Indian Weightlifting Federation. It is a big thing for me that I was able to win the gold medal for India.
Two more silver medals were added in weightlifting. Chanambam Rishikanta Singh bagged silver in the men’s 60kg event, while Raja Muthupandi claimed silver in the men’s 65kg final.
India’s medal tally currently stands at 4 with 1 gold by Mirabai, 2 silver each by Chanambam Rishikanta Singh and Raja Muthupandi and bronze by Jhandu Kumar, men’s heavyweight para powerlifting.
Notable performances on Day 4 also came in boxing, as Jadumani Singh beat Pakistan’s Sumama Rehman (men’s 55kg Round of 16) and Preeti Pawar defeated Malawi’s Deborah Mtenje (women’s 54kg Round of 16).
