Rohit Sharma’s international future continues to be in the news with some subtle exchanges between Virat Kohli and former India head coach Ravi Shastri during the second ODI between India and England at Cardiff.
Virat Kohli was visibly emotional during India’s second innings as he sat next to Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah after being bowled for 65. The images on the first look looked like something unremarkable but a fresh light has shed on the scenario after reports surfaced that Rohit is set to take part in the final ODI in his international career at Lord’s on Sunday.
The Indian selection committee has notified the tailor to that, as per the reports, that the veteran opener may not be in the team for the upcoming World Cup 2027. The selectors are keen on providing Yashasvi Jaiswal an additional chance as long-term replacement for Rohit at the top of the order.
Rohit’s struggles with the bat have continued in the England series, managing scores of just 11 and 26 in the first two ODIs.
Kohli was also spotted pushing Rohit from the non-striker’s end during the Cardiff game as the duo had a brief partnership, in turn stoking up more emotions in the fans.
Former India coach Ravi Shastri too were seen paying a tribute to Rohit’s great ODI career in commemoration. In his remarks on the Indian skipper’s exploits, Shastri spoke about his five World Cup centuries in 2019, his tremendous contributions to the success of Indian white-ball cricket and the manner in which he builed the Indian side’s dominance over the years.
Rohit proved to be a composed batsman all morning, but the dramatic moments he has shared with the bat and the voices of commentators are only raising more questions about his retirement with the final being the next one on the horizon.
