The National Medical Commission (NMC) has given a big impetus to medical education in Chhattisgarh with the approval of 05 new medical colleges under the government for session 2026-27. The seats will be 250 with each college having 50 in a year.
The new medical college will be built in Dantewada (Gidam), Jashpur (Kunkuri), Manendragarh, Janjgir-Champa and Kabirdham. The expansion would be a big milestone in providing access to healthcare facilities in to some of these areas which are dominated by tribal communities and were once influenced by the Left-Wing Extremism.
Approval for the five medical colleges was dubbed as “historic achievement” by Health Minister Shyam Bihari Jaiswal, who said it was for the first time a smaller state was being granted permission for five colleges at a time. It would help in the pursuit of medical education by more of the students from rural and tribal areas, who otherwise had to travel long distances to avail such opportunities, he said.
The minister also answered queries regarding the opposition’s criticism of the state’s application process and declared that it turned out the government’s move was correct. He is thankful to Union health minister JP Nadda and Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai as well as Prime Minister Narendra Modi for supporting the quest under ‘double-engine government’.
The new institutions will be established to expand the volume of MBBS seats and enhance their medical infrastructure and healthcare services, in addition to strengthening the scientific research in the specific medical area in the underserved districts, says the state government.
The expansion is expected to fill gaps in doctors in tribal and rural areas and help eliminate health disparities. The transfer is expected to generate greater opportunities for aspiring medical students and greatly enhance the public health care system in the upcoming few years.
