Ecuador were one of the largest outclassing performances in the FIFA World Cup 2026, defying the odds in the process and beating Germany 2-1 in a Round of 16 victory to ensure their position as one of the world cup’s top thirds who finished.

It was a frustrating campaign which Ecuador had had from their opening two games and it was now looking at an early exit, as they faced their final Group C game of the tournament in the top of the second half. Germany were formidable with the same unbeaten side on the line to make the journey. But Ecuador played up to retain their World Cup dream.

Germany got the best of it when Leroy Sane got the net from far within the first couple of minutes. It took the VAR a long time before the goal was awarded but once Julian Nagelsmann’s side had crossed the line of the box firmly in control.

Instead of getting demoralized by this setback, Ecuador reacted with renewed confidence. John Yeboah showed the Germans he could play fast and Moises Caicedo came up trumps in midfield as Ecuador slowly plugged its way into the game.

They refused to be pressured and were rewarded with Ecuador’s first goal of the tournament from Nilson Angulo who levelled the scores and started celebrations from the travelling supporters. It was a complete turnaround with the equaliser taking the wind out of Germany’s sails.

It was a corner kick from them that enabled Ecuador to marque the game-winning goal from amongst the scraps which they had come back from against one of the tournament favourites. The outcome took Ecuador to the knockout round and, of course, Germany advanced to the next round despite the loss now as they had advanced after defeating Pakistan in their previous group match.

The triumph was a historic one for Ecuador, who overcame their tough group stage journey to create one of the tournament’s most remarkable stories to date.
