Mumbai: Overtaken by an argument over a train door during a rainy afternoon, a 22-year-old man was stabbed to death inside a Mumbai rail carriage on a local train late Monday night, leading to a deadly dispute that erupted during the service.

The victim, Mayank Lohar, was a commuter who was traveling in a first-class compartment in a “fast local” between Andheri and Borivali stations in Churchgate suburb. Lohar is alleged to have requested someone else to close the coach door while heavy rain, leading to an argument.

The situation spiralled out of control very quickly with the man in charge allegedly grabbing a sharp item and slashing Lohar on the abdomen, investigators said. The injured young passenger was in critical condition and the train was on its way to Borivali.

Police have not yet brought the train to a full stop and the man was said to have jumped off the train close to Platform 6 at Borivali station, running away. Murder case registered by Borivali Government Railway Police (GRP) and a search job has been initiated to track the accused.

Railway Protection Force (RPF) and GRP men acted swiftly on its receipt of information after the incident. Lohar was parted from the coach and rushed to get medical attention. He was taken to the emergency medical facility at Borivali station and admitted to Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivali where he passed away from his injuries.

The shocking incident has once again raised concerns about passenger safety on Mumbai’s suburban railway network, one of the busiest commuter systems in the world.
