A 20-year-old NEET aspirant was found dead at his residence in Hosur moments before the start of NEET UG re-examination. The shocking incident has once again raised concerns over exam-related stress among students.
The deceased, identified as C Vetriyanantham, had been preparing for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for the past three years and was reportedly under significant pressure after repeated attempts.
According to police, the student was anxious about the upcoming exam and feared failing again, which may have contributed to his distress. On Saturday, the student was found hanging at his home in the Tamil Nadu Housing Board colony in Hosur while his parents were away. The Police said he had been struggling with exam-related stress for a long time and had been worried about the outcome of the re-test scheduled for the day. However, Authorities recovered a handwritten note from the spot in which the student expressed love for his family and apologised for taking the extreme step. He reportedly wrote that he had been unable to sleep properly for weeks due to fear of the examination and apologised to his parents and brother.
The body was sent to Hosur Government Hospital for post-mortem examination. Police have registered a case and are investigating the matter.
Ahead of the examination, BJP leader K Annamalai had already warned that strict security protocols could increase anxiety among candidates already under academic stress. He had said that the militarisation of NEET re-exam may add pressure on students. His remarks were made before the re-examination took place and were part of a broader discussion around exam-related stress and administrative measures.
The current incident has renewed focus on mental health concerns among competitive exam aspirants and the pressure associated with high-stakes examinations.
