Days after the Centre imposed a temporary ban on messaging platform ‘Telegram ‘ a young boy has been detained in Bhilwara. He has been selling hoax NEET UG re-exam question papers through a Telegram channel- said a senior official involved in the case. The centre has banned Telegram citing it as a medium to spread rumours and fake question papers luring anxious students into exchange of money.

The accused has been identified as Akash Chaudhary, who was allegedly running a Telegram channel using VPN to hide his identity. He has been sent to the police custody until June 22, 2026- said Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Bhilwara, Nemi Chand Chaudhary after the accused was presented in court.

“Before the NEET exam, which will be held on June 21, a boy named Akash Chaudhary from Patel Nagar created a fake paper, and some people have been found selling it. He was arrested by the Pratap Nagar Police Station; a case has been registered against him, and the investigation is being conducted. He was presented in court today, which sent him to police custody until the 22nd. In addition, we will investigate all those involved. Fifty-four members have subscribed to his Telegram group… A thorough investigation will be conducted into this,” DSP Chaudhary said updating the media about the arrest.

The Delhi HC on Friday upheld the government’s orders to temporarily ban Telegram and remove it from the Play store and Appl App store, observing that the messaging platform’s architecture allows expedited amplification of unlawful content and that narrower measures had failed to curb misuse linked to examination fraud.

Rejecting the appeal by Telegram, the court pressed that the Telegram’s technical features, including large public channels, cloud-based storage, extensive bot ecosystems, username-based operations, mirror channels, and message-editing capabilities, allow its misuse for circulating false news and facilitating fraud. The court added that despite removing the channel, the apps architecture facilitated mirror channels and migration of subscribers “enabling unlawful activities to resume almost immediately.”
