Jyoti Priya Mallick, the former wife and former trustee of West Bengal minister for Environment, urban amenities and development (UPA and development), and a former member of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), has quit the party saying that her health conditions are severe. The development is at a politically sensitive moment for the party, as the party has had so many splits since developments in West Bengal and in Parliament.
Associate of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and veteran TMC activist Mallick said he had already informed the party leadership about his decision. His health had grown less than perfect and he was less able to carry out his duties of the organisation, he said.
The resignation adds to the points highlighted as Mallick recently joined the all-powerful working committee of the TMC as part of its major reshuffle just days after that. His resignation has fueled rumors of continuing intraparty turmoil.
Mallick was the Food and Supplies Minister of West Bengal till 2021 and was active in politics for more than a decade. But the crackdown over alleged remonstrate ration bill continues to derail his political career in October 2023 after his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate. He’s since commented on health issues, and has undergone numerous medical screenings.
His resignation comes also with a burgeoning revolt within the TMC. Over the last few days the party has seen a significant upheaval as a number of MPs and legislators break ranks in opposition to the party’s leadership. Some rebel leaders have wanted to establish autonomy as a political entity, one of the most serious divisions suffered by the party in recent years.
Mallick’s departure from any official role will further drive the debate on what direction the TMC will take as it faces increasing challenges on its business front internally and politically.
