A 26-year-old alleged to be spying for intelligence agencies of Pakistan has been remanded in custody in precommittal bail with a court in Rajasthan for five more days for further investigation, officials said on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, the CID (Intelligence) after surveillance, arrested the accused who was identified as Mustaq Ali from Jaisalmer district. He was taken down in front of the court of Special Judicial Magistrate, Jaipur Metropolitan-I, for police custody till June 22.
The CID had requested the bail to be extended by seven days for investigation of the accused’s alleged involvement and linkage. But the court granted custody for five days while the investigation is still pending.
Police said the suspected espionage networks and activities from the countries on the border have been a source of concern for intelligence agencies. Ali was at some point watched and judged in the course of his surveillance and was subjected to further investigation for his actions and commotion.
According to the prosecution, there was a need to conduct the interrogation to obtain more details and check for any links involved in the case. Investigators must interview the accused about his contact and communications with others (including foreign intelligence agents) with a view to finding evidence regarding any other relationships he may have had.
Authorities have not simultaneously released any details of the allegations, claiming that it is “sensitive” to do so. The case is being dealt with by CID (Intelligence) who are still investigating activities in the region suspected to be linked to espionage.
A place like Jaisalmer, which is supporting the India-Pakistan border, always faces security surveillance due to its strategic importance. Efforts to thwart threats to national security continue to be carried out with great caution, officials reiterated.
Additional information will be available as a result of the investigation during the holding period.
