Stand-up comedian Pranit More has issued a fresh apology after facing widespread criticism over comments made during a crowd-work segment at his Gurugram show that went viral on social media. The controversy began after a clip from More’s performance showed an audience member, identified as Himanshu Jangra, sharing an experience from a date. During the interaction, Jangra suggested that after spending Rs 370 on a plate of chicken biryani, he expected something in return from the woman, a remark that drew sharp criticism online for allegedly promoting entitlement and non-consensual behaviour.
As backlash intensified, More released a video statement admitting that he made a mistake by not intervening when the remarks were made during the show. “I probably deserve this hate,” More said in the video, adding that the audience was laughing at the comments and he got carried away in the moment. The comedian apologised to those who were hurt by the incident and said he regretted giving the audience member a platform that contributed to the controversy escalating further. He also stated that he is cooperating with authorities in connection with legal proceedings arising from the matter.
The controversy gained further traction after a longer version of the interaction surfaced online. The extended clip reportedly showed Jangra elaborating on the incident in greater detail while More continued the crowd-work segment and the audience reacted with laughter. The viral videos triggered widespread debate on social media about consent, misogyny and the responsibilities of performers during live comedy shows.
The matter has also drawn the attention of authorities. The National Commission for Women (NCW) summoned both Pranit More and Himanshu Jangra, stating that their remarks and conduct appeared to glorify sexual coercion and non-consensual behaviour.
