The police have arrested a 45-year-old man who allegedly defrauded a job aspirer by promising him a railway job for his son for ₹21 lakh in Odisha. After investigation in the alleged fraud, the accused, Gadadhar Nath from Aska, Ganjam district, has been arrested from Cuttack district.

The Odisha police sources said the complainant had remitted the funds via online transactions in 2024 and 2025, on the promise of his son being appointed as a “loco pilot” in the Indian Railways. Alleged to have given the family some documents, it is claimed that he had handed the family over a supposed “appointment letter” and a “joining letter” issued by Eastern Railway in Kolkata, to gain their trust.

The alleged fraud was detected when the complainant’s son went to Kolkata for joining the job. The documents were said to be fake and not valid during the verification process. The papers didn’t contain any sorting identifiers and seemed like forgery, the police said.

The complainant found out about the potential fraud and repeatedly requested his money back. Authorities said the accused initially promised to pay back the money and then later accepted a settlement arrangement in which he could return the money. Police said that a portion of the amount, totaling ₹3 lakh, has been paid, but the rest has not been repaid.

Further complaints were made and a case was lodged in Aska Police Station and the accused was arrested. Investigators now are questioning whether other people might have been victims of a similar job related scam.

Job seekers have been advised by the police to check any job offers made in the recruitment process through official routes and not pay money for any guarantees on getting job offers.
