On Thursday, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), around 100 members staged heavy protest inside the premises of Narmadapuram Collectorate demanding the reinstatement of admissions to a law course at the Government Narmada College here. The students’ protest into Gate No. 2 of the Collectorate and raising slogans against the government led to a legal murky through an incident of alleged violation of BNSS, Section 163.

The halt in admissions to five-year BA-LLB programme for the new academic year has sparked the protest. The protest had been sparked by halts in admissions to five-year BA-LLB programme at the university for the new academic session after the admission approval was not received from Barkatullah University. Students say that the College has been able to run its law course since 1998 and implementing the integrated course BA-LLB in college in 2022-23 but the lower court’s failure to grant it recognition within the stipulated time frame by the Bar Council of India has endangered the life of future Law students.

Students held a demonstration on the college campus that rallied to the Collectorate after which students took up protest on the premises for several hours. Later, a student group was invited into the premises by the administration and a memorandum was presented to the Higher Education Minister.

But this is now a legal angle as senior officials said demonstrations within the Collectorate premises are within restricted regions and it can be considered as a violation of the BNSS Section 163 or Section 144 of CrPC. Authorities have stated that they will issue a formal letter to the local police station asking them to do something.

When his agitators highlighted this issue, ABVP leaders have expressed their fear of a bigger agitation if the law programme was not reinstated. Meanwhile, the authorities are working on the issue of whether legal action will take place against participants in the protest.
