A passenger who allegedly destroyed an Air India window in a flight from Chandigarh to Delhi has been put at risk of being added to the Air India currently on “no-fly list”, officials have said.

The incident took place on a flight of Air India operating as the flight number AI 1879 en route to Delhi on Sunday as it came in to land in Delhi. The incident happened Sunday, while the air India aircraft was preparing to land in Delhi on a flight operating as AI 1879. The passenger allegedly smashed into the inner window glass on a cabin window after another incident despite warnings by the crew.Multiple warnings were given by cabin crew but the passenger responded by breaking the inner window glass on a cabin window.

The workers were allegedly verbally and then also written warned by the airline staff, before taking it to the escalation stage. Once in Delhi the passenger was handed to the airport security personnel and ground personnel for further action.

An Air India spokeswoman confirmed the incident, saying the aircraft had landed safely, and routine operating procedures had been adhered to during the incident. The airline said that there was no negative impact to the safety of the passengers, crew or aircraft’s operations at any point.

The current regulations in India for the conduct of travelling passengers of an aircraft have handed it over to the board’s internal committee. The panel can decide in up to 30 days whether or not the passenger is “unruly” and how long the ban will last. The airlines can place a temporary suspension up to 30 days in the meantime.

According to the officials, the passenger’s conduct on the flight was abusive and they repeatedly requested him to clear out of his cabin. He, however, was handed over to security officials in Delhi, reportedly where he expressed his remorse for his acts.

Air India restated a no-tolerance stance on conduct that might impact the safety, security or comfort of passengers and/or crew onboard.
