At least 21 people have died after a fire broke out at Lemon Green restaurant in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar area on Wednesday. Delhi Fire Services (DFS) received the alert about the fire at 9:45 AM. Firefighters rushed to the location and carried out rescue operations, successfully evacuating 37 people from the basement area. Those rescued were subsequently admitted to hospitals for treatment. So far, 16 deaths have been confirmed by officials.
Sources indicated that several foreign nationals from African countries were among those staying at the hotel at the time of the incident.
Malviya Nagar MLA Satish Upadhyay said the fire reportedly started around 9:00 AM. He stated that officials immediately activated emergency response mechanisms and coordinated with multiple agencies, including the Disaster Management team, District Magistrate, Station House Officer, Sub-Divisional Magistrate, and Municipal Corporation officials.
Upadhyay informed the media that the exact cause of the fire would be determined only after a detailed investigation is completed.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed grief over the loss of lives in the incident. She said the Delhi government was closely monitoring the situation and assured all necessary medical assistance to the affected families. The Chief Minister also said that the government stands with the families impacted by the tragedy and remains committed to extending all possible assistance during this difficult time.
The hotel, which has approximately 25 rooms, reportedly had accommodated around 40 guests, including foreign nationals who had travelled to the country for medical treatment.
