Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah’s resignation has been accepted. Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot accepted Siddaramaiah’s resignation after he returned to Bengaluru late Thursday night. With Siddaramaiah’s resignation accepted, current Deputy CM DK Shivakumar is set to become the new Chief Minister of Karnataka. Shivakumar will be elected leader of the legislative party at a meeting of MLAs this evening. DK Shivakumar will then stake claim to form the government.
The six-month-long drama over the Chief Minister’s position in Karnataka came to an end on Thursday (May 28). Siddaramaiah announced his resignation at a breakfast meeting with his ministers. He then went to Lok Bhavan at 3 p.m. and submitted his resignation to the Governor’s private secretary, as the Governor was out of Bengaluru. Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot accepted Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s resignation after he returned to Bengaluru.
After resigning as Chief Minister of Karnataka, Siddaramaiah addressed a press conference. During the press conference, he said, “After the high command had already asked me to resign, I submitted my resignation today. I am confident that when the Governor arrives, he will accept it, as this must be done in accordance with the Constitution. We have an absolute majority. Therefore, it is constitutional to allow the Chief Minister to form a government. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Mallikarjun Kharge for providing me this opportunity.”
