The State Election Commission commenced the long-awaited vote counting process today at 8:00 AM for the elections to 102 municipal corporations in Punjab. The election process is expected to culminate before the afternoon. Indeed, it would be safe to conclude that the municipal corporation elections are a very critical prelude towards the next state assembly elections slated to happen next year and hence act as a litmus test for all political parties involved. According to the post-poll day report released by the Punjab State Election Commission, Punjab recorded a voter turnout of 63.94 percent in the general election to the municipalities of 2026.

The overall voting population in Punjab voted in a total of 22,38,241 people in order to determine the destiny of the candidates for 102 Municipal Corporations, Municipal Councils, and Nagar Panchayats. As per the poll day summary, the voting process covered 1,897 wards and used 3,833 polling stations across Punjab. A closer analysis of the voting pattern shows huge differences between the urban and semi-urban areas. The Nagar Panchayats led in voter turnout with a high of 76.18%, followed by Municipal Councils with a 65.06% turn-out, and Municipal Corporations with 59.91%.

As far as the ruling AAP is concerned, this election is extremely significant because it serves as an important safeguard of its political base as it looks to defend itself from any challenges to its position in Punjab. The opposition parties like the Congress, SAD, and BJP are all trying to make the most out of this situation by leveraging local trends in order to ensure that they have a good shot at winning the upcoming assembly elections. Security has been strictly maintained around all 115 centers where results will be counted through CCTV cameras.
