Delhi continued to be plagued by extreme heat on Wednesday, as per the forecast issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which stated that very severe heatwaves would continue to remain prevalent throughout the day. However, relief was on its way as a fresh wave of weather disturbances expected to hit northwest parts of the country during the latter half of the week will lead to showers and a substantial fall in the temperature. In Delhi, the base weather station at Safdarjung experienced the lowest temperature of 26.2°C on Wednesday morning, around normal for late May.
The city had witnessed another tough day yesterday as Safdarjung reported the highest temperature of 43.5°C on Tuesday, three degrees higher than the normal temperature for the season. The highest temperature recorded at various stations in the city on Tuesday was at the Ayanagar station, where it was recorded at 44.8°C.
According to weather forecasters, the temperatures were expected to rise higher still during the day, ranging from 44°C to 46°C in certain areas within the National Capital Region (NCR). Because of their sustained exposure to the intense heat, people had noticed that fewer individuals walked around on the streets during the day and felt physically uncomfortable because of it. T
he good news, however, was that the current heat wave was expected to be the last one before cooler conditions took hold. According to meteorologists, a Western Disturbance is due to start affecting the region from Thursday onwards. This would bring about moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder, lightning, and strong gusts of wind blowing at 40 to 50 kilometers per hour by Thursday night. The change in weather will result in a marked drop in the maximum temperature during the day, which will settle down to a much more comfortable range of 35°C to 37°C on Friday.
