Apart from the four Dhams, the Amarnath Yatra holds special significance. This journey is as difficult as it is virtuous. According to religious belief, a visit to Baba Barfani grants salvation, earning the same merit as visiting 23 pilgrimage sites. This year, the Amarnath Yatra will begin on July 3rd and continue until August 28th. Extensive security and health arrangements have been made for this 57-day journey.
The Amarnath Caves are located approximately 3,978 meters above sea level, making the journey physically and mentally challenging. Despite this, thousands of pilgrims arrive each year to visit the Amarnath cave shrine.

The amazing mystery of Baba Barfani still persists.
The naturally formed ice lingam in the Amarnath cave is known as Baba Barfani. This lingam takes its full shape every year during the month of Shravan. It keeps increasing and decreasing according to the phases of the moon. Even from a scientific perspective, this mystery has not been fully clarified till date. According to history, this cave was discovered by a shepherd named Buta Malik in 1850. According to mythological belief, sage Bhrigu was the first to see the lingam in this cave. This holy place was revealed after sage Kashyap drained the water from the Kashmir Valley.
Why was it named Amarnath?
According to scriptures, Lord Shiva narrated the story of immortality to Goddess Parvati in this cave. This is why the place is called Amarnath. A pair of pigeons also heard the story here. They became immortal, and even today, they are often seen in the inaccessible cave.
Religious Significance of Amarnath Yatra
According to the Puranas, visiting Amarnath grants 10 times more merit than visiting Kashi, 100 times more than visiting Prayag, and 1000 times more than visiting Naimisharanya. This pilgrimage is also considered a test of faith, restraint, and patience.
