Large parts of Western Europe continued to be under the control of an unusually hot heatwave on Tuesday, May 26, 2026. This exceptional atmospheric system broke temperature records for May in both France and the United Kingdom and prompted health advisories, extreme weather warnings, and even deaths linked to the heat in the region.
The UK Meteorological Office reported that the country had seen the warmest day of May ever recorded, with temperatures reaching a record high of 34.8°C (94.6°F) at Kew Gardens in southwest London, breaking records set several decades earlier. At the same time, Londoners also faced a “tropical night” where nighttime temperatures did not drop below 20°C.
Escaping the Hot High-Pressure Weather Conditions
Due to the early summer weather, the public looked for unusual means of beating the heat. On Sunday, May 24, bathers could be seen taking a dip in the Sky Pool, an open-air acrylic pool situated on a pedestrian bridge spanning the two skyscrapers located in Embassy Gardens, southwest London.
Météo-France observed that more than 350 stations broke the previous records for the month of May in terms of temperature, reaching up to 37.1 degrees Celsius in the southwest region. As per DW and meteorologists, such unprecedented heat waves occur as a result of “heat dome,” which creates a condition wherein there is a trapping of a large body of air that originates from northern Africa and travels across Europe.
This unprecedented spike in temperature has cost many lives as well. The authorities in both France and the United Kingdom have cited at least some deaths in the form of drowning accidents where people have ventured into unpatrolled areas to avoid the heat. Climate scientists argue that this phenomenon demonstrates the severity of an environmental crisis. Europe, they say, is warming much faster as compared to the world average, all thanks to the impact of human-caused climate change.
