New Delhi: After two days of slight relief, the capital Delhi once again witnessed severe heat and heatwave-like conditions on Sunday. People had to face the scorching sun and hot winds throughout the day. IMD has issued a Yellow Alert, predicting a heatwave for the next 3 days. According to the Meteorological Department, hot and dry weather will prevail in Delhi-NCR for the time being, due to which the temperature may rise further. The maximum temperature in the capital has remained above 40 degree Celsius continuously since May 16. Heatwave conditions persisted in many areas throughout the past week.
Although temperatures dropped slightly on Friday and Saturday due to weather conditions, the mercury rose sharply again on Sunday. The Meteorological Department says that people are unlikely to get relief from the scorching heat for the next few days. The effect of hot winds is expected to be more pronounced during the afternoon.
On Sunday, people were troubled by the scorching sun since morning, and the heat became more intense as the day progressed. The intense sunlight and hot winds made it difficult for people to step out of their homes. Streets and markets wore a relatively deserted look in many areas. According to the International Medical Center (IMD), Delhi’s maximum temperature was recorded at 43.6 degrees Celsius, 3.4 degrees above normal. The minimum temperature was 28.7 degrees Celsius.
The weather in Delhi suddenly changed late Sunday evening. A thick layer of dust covered the city’s sky, affecting visibility and forcing residents to endure humid and hot winds. According to the Meteorological Department, a strong dust storm had formed in the Thar Desert during the day. This dust storm slowly moved through Rajasthan towards Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh. As a result, a thick layer of dust became clearly visible in Delhi’s sky after around 8:30 pm. Air quality is also expected to be affected in many areas. The IMD has already issued a warning of heat waves and hot winds for the next few days. According to experts, desert dust is reaching Delhi-NCR along with western and northwestern winds, making the weather even drier.
