New Delhi: In response to the ongoing concerns and social media discussions over disparity in the Class 12 evaluation process- the CBSE has issued a clarification on the new On-Screen Marking system. The board asserted that the system was designed to ensure fairness, transparency and consistency in assessment directing students dissatisfied with their marks to apply for re-evaluation.

Acknowledging the wave of posts on social media, the CBSE said on X that it had “observed” concerns being raised. It said the OSM was introduced to enhance “transparency, fairness, and consistency” in evaluation, highlighting that the system ensured stepwise marking, while auto-calculating totals to minimise human error.

The board has confirmed that re-evaluation window opens on May 19. ” Accordingly, this opportunity will be made available this year as well. Students may apply for copies of their evaluated answer books, and in case any discrepancy is observed by them, they may request for corrective action. These processes are required to be undertaken through the mechanism prescribed by the Board, the post noted.”

This year, 1.77 lakh students appeared for CBSE Class 12 examinations, 76,000 more than the previous year. The pass percentage this year reported a drop by 3.19% in comparison to the previous year.

How is OSM implemented?

A total of 98,66,622 answer books were evaluated under the OSM system, marking its first full-scale deployment at the Class 12 level. The answers scripts are scanned and uploaded to a digital portal where the teacher assesses them on computer screens and enter marks digitally and annotated responses online. The total marks were auto calculated to minimize human error.
