The West Bengal government on Friday suspended three senior police officers over alleged lapses in the investigation into the 2024 RG Kar rape and murder case, which involved the killing of a trainee doctor at a state-run medical college in Kolkata.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said the action follows allegations of mishandling the case, including irregular conduct during the early stages of the investigation. The state government also announced a departmental inquiry against former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal and two other officers linked to the case.

The incident, which occurred in August 2024, shocked the nation after the victim was found dead in a seminar hall of the RG Kar hospital. Later investigations revealed that she had been raped and murdered by civic volunteer Sanjay Roy. The case triggered widespread protests across India, with doctors and healthcare workers demanding justice and stronger workplace safety measures.

According to officials, the suspended officers are accused of negligence, attempting to influence the victim’s family with monetary offers, and holding an unauthorised press briefing related to the investigation. The Chief Minister clarified that the disciplinary proceedings are separate from the ongoing criminal investigation, which is being handled by the Central Bureau of Investigation and is currently under judicial review.

The inquiry will be conducted under the supervision of the state home secretary, guided by the chief secretary. The move marks a significant administrative step in a case that continues to draw strong political and public attention in West Bengal and beyond.
