West Bengal: Rathindra Bose, a first-time MLA and Sangh Parivar loyalist, is elected as the 18th speaker of the West Bengal Assembly on Friday. He became the first legislator from north Bengal to occupy the post in post-Independence history.

Bose is a chartered accountant by profession and has risen through the ranks of the Sangh Parivar over several decades. He has been a pivotal figure in managing the party’s interests in North Bengal, a region that remains a BJP stronghold. His appointment is being viewed as as a strong message from the BJP government to north Bengal, a region that has emerged as one of the party’s strongest support bases in the state over the past decade.

With the BJP enjoying an overwhelming majority of 207 MLAs in the 294-member House after its emphatic victory in the recent assembly polls, and a nearly empty opposition, Bose’s victory was eventful. CM Suvendu Adhikari on Thursday announced Rathindra Bose as the speaker for his term, lashing out at the opposition. Following this, pro-term Speaker Tapas Roy conducted a voice vote. The pro term Speaker declared Bose elected as the Speaker of the assembly after all 207 BJP legislators extended their support in his favour.

In a first, the West Bengal Assembly has decided to broadcast its proceedings live. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari while addressing the 18th West Bengal Assembly. The initiative aims to ensure transparency and keep the public informed about legislative activities.

Adhikari pressed the critical role of the House in meeting public expectations, underscoring the importance of operating within the principles of the Constitution and established parliamentary rules.
