Beijing: US President Trump and his Chinese counterpart completed the second day of talks at the Beijing Summit. As per reports, Trump is due to depart on Friday after a Luncheon meeting with Chinese President Xi.
Interacting with the reporters as the day began, Trump said that after his tour of Zhongnanhai, he and Xi had discussed Iran. Speaking in regard to Iran he said, “we don’t want them to have nuclear weapons”, and “we want the strait open”. Xi said they had reached a “new bilateral relationship” and promised to send Trump some seeds of the Chinese roses they admired during their walk in Zhongnanhai.
Chinese President Xi Jinping and his US counterpart Donald Trump had an in-depth exchange of views on major issues concerning the two countries and the world, and reached a series of new common understandings, a Chinese foreign ministry official said Friday.
On Thursday Xi had hailed US-China relations, calling them the world’s “most important”, while Trump said talks were “extremely positive”. Following his arrival at the Great Hall of the People, US President was greeted by a military band and children waving flags. In his opening remarks to Trump, Xi called on the US to be “partners not rivals” and made a reference to overcoming the Thucydides trap. Trump told Xi it was an “honour” to be his friend, hoping the former would agree for trade with the US. It is worth noting that has brought along executives from 30 major companies, including Tesla’s Elon Musk and Nvidia’s Jensen Huang.
The two sides “discussed ways to enhance economic cooperation”, including expanding US firms’ access to the Chinese market and Chinese investment in US industries, said the statement – adding that leaders from some of the largest US companies joined part of the meeting. Discussion around the importance of ending the flow of fentanyl precursors into the US were also made.
According to the White House statement, however, “both countries agreed that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon”. The US statement also said “the two sides agreed that the Strait of Hormuz must remain open to support the free flow of energy”.
During the talks, President Xi “expressed interest” in buying more American oil to reduce China’s dependence on the Strait of Hormuz, the White House statement said.
