Washington: US President Donald Trump departed for Beijing on Tuesday afternoon to meet with China’s President Xi Jinping, saying he would have a “long talk” about Iran with the Chinese leader but that trade would be the main focus.

Trump warned that the United States would “finish the job” if Iran refuses Washington’s terms to end the war and address its nuclear program. “They’ll either do the right thing, or we’ll finish the job,” he said prior his departure.

Officially, Iranian officials have not yet responded in detail about the comments from Qatar and Turkiye. Reports hint they are not accepting that they are using this strategic waterway as a weapon of war. It is seen that IRGC is expanding their areas to tighten control [over the strait].

Earlier in the day, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has urged Islamabad, via his Pakistani counterpart, Mohammad Ishaq Dar, to step up mediation efforts to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz. According to local reporters, in a recent telephonic communication Dar briefed Wang on Pakistan’s recent mediation efforts between the US and Iran and thanked China for its support. He also expressed hope of a strengthened coordination between the two countries, Xinhua reported. Wang commended Pakistan for facilitating the talks and helping extend the temporary ceasefire. China’s top diplomat expressed hope that Islamabad would maintain confidence and help to restore regional peace, according to Xinhua.

More than 40 defence ministers met to discuss post-war plans to ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. The multinational military mission is to be led by the UK and France. Japan’s Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi participated in the meeting and described the strategic waterway as an “international public good”. He called for stability in the strait to be restored as soon as possible.
