Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma took his oath as the Chief Minister of Assam for the second consecutive term on Tuesday, May 12, 2026. The oath-taking ceremony for the newly elected Government of Assam was taken on Veterinary College Ground, Khanapara, Guwahati, in the presence of the Governor of Assam, Dr. Lakshman Prasad Acharya.

The swearing-in ceremony witnessed the participation of many dignitaries, including the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, who acted as the chief guest on the occasion. Other distinguished guests included the Union Ministers and Chief Ministers of other NDA-ruled states.

The swearing-in ceremony comes after the record victory of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the State Assembly Elections conducted in April 2026. The NDA won a total of 102 out of 126 seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is the main party of the NDA alliance, won an outright majority in the election by securing 82 seats.

The elevation of Dr. Sarma to the highest office was further cemented when he was unanimously chosen as the head of the BJP Legislature Party and the NDA Government in a meeting held at Guwahati, under the leadership of Union Minister JP Nadda.

The outgoing members of the government along with senior leaders of the party recommended him, praising his dynamic leadership and development-oriented policies of the past five years. Future Focus Areas In his initial speech at the oath-taking ceremony, the Chief Minister highlighted his dedication to the betterment of all societal strata through a “stronger” approach. He assured that the policy framework of the newly formed government will continue to revolve around the themes of Jati, Mati, and Bheti (Identity, Land, and Homeland).
