Chennai: Political drama in Tamil Nadu continues as TVK receives post poll support from AIADMK. A faction of the AIADMK led by CV Shanmugam and SP Velumani – extended support Tuesday to Tamil Nadu’s ruling coalition headed by Chief Minister Joseph Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.
“We need to revive the party… must discuss its future,” he told the press, also calling out AIADMK boss and ex-chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami for having considered an alliance with the DMK
Publically backing Vijay as chief minister the former law minister, accused general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami of exploring support from the DMK to lead the state, and announced that rebel MLAs would support the incoming Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government.
“…We decided to extend our support to the TVK, which emerged victorious. We founded this party against DMK. For 53 years, our politics have been against the DMK. Given this history, a proposal suggesting that an AIADMK government be formed with the support of the DMK was put forward; however, the majority of our members rejected and opposed it. If we were to form an alliance with the DMK, the AIADMK would cease to exist. They refused to accept such a scenario. We currently stand without any alliance, and our focus must now be on revitalising and strengthening our own party. We ultimately decided to extend our support to the TVK, which emerged victorious,” said the AIADMK leader.
Fracture within AIADMK displayed after some party MLAs, led by senior leader C V Shanmugam, submitted a letter to pro r Speaker M V Karuppaiah seeking the appointment of former minister S P Velumani as the AIADMK legislature party.\
TVK emerged as the largest single party in TN assembly elections 2026 with 108 seats seeking cross party support to form a government. It later gathered support from VCK, Congress and others paving way to take stake of the government.
