In what was essentially a warning from the apex court, the Bench of Chief Justice of India, Surya Kant, along with Justice Joymalya Bagchi, gave an ultimatum to the Government of Madhya Pradesh, stating that a decision on the sanction of prosecution for Kunwar Vijay Shah would be reached within four weeks. This case was regarding some defamatory statements made by Kunwar Vijay Shah about Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, an Army officer, who gained national fame during the “Operation Sindoor” briefing.

The Bench showed great displeasure regarding the delay in the matter and dismissed the minister’s plea for a solution by offering an apology.

“Please make a decision… Enough is enough now. And report compliance within 4 weeks,” the Chief Justice observed.

The legal battle stems from comments made by Shah following Operation Sindoor, a military action launched after the Pahalgam terror attack. Colonel Qureshi, an officer from the Corps of Signals, had gained widespread acclaim for leading the official briefings alongside Foreign Ministry officials.

During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the state, characterized the minister’s remarks as “unfortunate,” suggesting they might have been a “slip of the tongue” during a failed attempt to praise the officer. However, CJI Surya Kant sharply disagreed, describing the comments as “most unfortunate” and noting that seasoned political figures are typically very articulate when they intend to show respect.
