On Friday, West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislature party leader Suvendu Adhikari was elected as the leader of the party in the state, clearing the path for him to become the first Chief Minister in the history of the state from the BJP. The swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected BJP government is to be held at the famous Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata on Saturday.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah congratulated newly elected MLAs and applauded the BJP workers for winning a historic mandate despite political violence and alleged intimidation in the elections, during the crucial BJP legislature party meeting.
Speaking to leaders of the parties, Shah said the people of Bengal had trusted the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a challenging political atmosphere. He termed the BJP win as a “milestone” in the history of politics in Bengal, which had been dominated by the Left and Trinamool Congress for decades.
The BJP, which erupted into a landslide victory in the just-held assembly elections, has ended a 15-year rule by Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee. The government was changed with the results and the state assembly was dissolved to form the new government.
Suvendu Adhikari’s assertion is a sudden political movement. He was a close confidant of Mamata Banerjee in the Trinamool Congress before he switched to the BJP prior to the 2021 polls. The change in direction made him one of the BJP’s go-getters in Bengal and put him in a political battle with Banerjee that gained the attention of all India.
With the BJP set to become the first-ever party to rule West Bengal, the power sharing process with the Congress is now expected to be completed shortly after he takes oath as the new caretaker of the state, anticipating the formation of his cabinet.
