Kolkata: Two days after West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee refused to resign, West Bengal governor R N Ravi dissolved the state legislative assembly with effect on Thursday, May 7.
Banerjee, however, said that she will not “formally” resign, claiming that poll results do not reflect “true public mandate.” “In exercise of the power conferred on me by sub-clause (b) of Clause (2) of Article 174 of the Constitution of India, I hereby dissolve the Legislative Assembly of West Bengal with effect from 7th of May 2026,” a gazette notification issued by the order of the Governor said.
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Thursday said West Bengal will get a stable and good government, which will be formed by the BJP for the first time in the state.
The BJP secured a landslide victory in the recently concluded elections in West Bengal, bagging 207 seats in the 294-seat assembly and ending the 15-year rule of the TMC government led by Mamata Banerjee.
The Chief Minister and select members of the Council of Ministers of the first Bharatiya Janata Party government in West Bengal will be sworn in on Saturday (May 9, 2026). The day is considered auspicious as per the Bengali calendar and is celebrated all across the State as ‘Pachise Baishak’ (25th day of the Bengali month of Baishak) as it marks the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore.
