The last season of The Boys is now available for Indian viewers on Prime Video, but it has not taken long for fans to notice that the Indian cut of the show seems to have been edited and censored. There have been complaints from social media users, including those on Reddit and X, about the scenes being cut, audio being drowned out by background noise, and other visual issues that alter the original presentation of the show.
The final season takes a deeper look into political turmoil, dictatorship and bloody conflict, with the ruthless Homelander (Antony Starr) stepping into the fray. Homelander’s propaganda and terror campaign is gradually gaining a grip on America, while resistance organizations organize themselves under Annie January’s leadership. Meanwhile, Billy Butcher sets out on a perilous quest that includes a virus that can affect those with Compound V.
Some of the edits reported in the Indian version of The Boys seem to be related to religious satire and pictures. Viewers of Episode 1, Fifteen Inches of Sheer Dynamite, have noticed that some portions of Sister Sage’s conversation about religion were cut, and that some words were either muted or omitted and were replaced by ellipses. Episode 2 is said to have toned down a disturbing video test of a virus that was shot with close-ups of biology.Episode 2 is said to have toned down a disturbing picture test of a virus filmed with close-ups of biology, due to the wider camera angles used.
Perhaps one of the most talked about editing comes in Episode 5, One Shots, where Jesus throws one of his figures into a dustbin at a symbolic moment related to Homelander’s ideology. Indian audiences pointed out that the figurine was digitally blurred in the local version. Yet another conversation with Homelander about prophets has also been apparently blocked.
While the series already has an adult rating, many critics pilloried the heaps of cutting, claiming that it weakens the themes and story of the show. The debate on the issue of censorship in streaming platforms has again come into the limelight in India, and fans are wondering if it is appropriate to apply these restrictions to OTT subscription platforms as well.
