Amidst an alarming wave of post-election violence, Chandranath Rath, the personal secretary of leading BJP politician Suvendu Adhikari who is a member of the opposition, was murdered late on Wednesday night in North 24 Parganas by yet unidentified assailants. Rath was gunned down in the area of Doharia on Jessore Road while returning to his home after visiting Kolkata.

As per reports, Rath had come under attack by miscreants traveling on a motorcycle and was shot within a few inches of his body through his car window glass. Reports further reveal that the attackers shattered the windscreen of the car and shot several rounds into Rath’s chest, who succumbed to injuries at a nearby private hospital.

Targeted Murder

This development comes just two days after the BJP swept the West Bengal assembly elections, bagging 207 seats. The TMC was reduced to a total of 80 seats in the legislative assembly. According to BJP leaders, Rath’s killing amounts to a “targeted political murder.” Chandranath Rath held the important position of a key manager during the recent state election campaign which saw the ouster of Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee.

Furthermore, Adhikari also defeated TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee at the Bhabanipur assembly seat, which was the outgoing chief minister’s home turf.

Top BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah are expected to attend the oath-taking ceremony in Kolkata on May 9.
