In an attempt to reassure the nation, the Union Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas has informed that there would be no disruption of fuel supplies, especially LPG, in spite of the imminent shutdown of Reliance Industries Limited’s (RIL) refinery at Jamnagar.

According to a senior official of the ministry, the turnaround of India’s largest domestic market refinery of 33 million tonnes per annum capacity is scheduled to occur late this month. The facility plays a crucial role in the country’s energy sector; however, the government is making efforts to avoid fuel shortages during the period.

“Shutdowns or turnarounds are part of normal operations as far as refineries are concerned. We in the ministry try to ensure that all shutdowns don’t happen at the same time. It has to be scattered so that the supplies for the domestic market are not affected, and that’s what we are ensuring now also. Right now the Nayara refinery is under shutdown, and by the mid of this month or even before that, it will come back (on stream). And then the Reliance shutdown will start,” Sharma said.

It is pertinent to note that at a time when the West Asia situation is creating ripples across the world in terms of energy movement, the government has initiated efforts to synchronize the shutdowns of various refineries to avoid overlap. In some cases, non-critical maintenance at the refineries has been postponed to keep the support.
