India and Jamaica have announced plans to enhance their bilateral partnership by strengthening their trade relationship and increasing cooperation in the movement of skilled labour, according to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. This announcement was made after Minister Jaishankar held extensive talks with his Jamaican counterpart, Kamina Johnson Smith.

Jaishankar reported that their discussions were comprehensive and included many different sectors such as Trade, Investment, Defence, Healthcare, Education, Agriculture and Digital Transformation, as well as reviewing current collaborative efforts and discussing opportunities for increased collaboration between the two nations.

Subsequent to their discussions, several agreements were signed, including the execution of previously agreed Memorandums of Understandings (MoU) between both nations related to Digital Payments, Cultural exchanges, Sports and Technological cooperation. Jaishankar stated that these initiatives would result in tangible outcomes for each country and will increase the economic engagement between the two countries.

India also recognises the strategic role that Jamaica plays as a logistics hub and gateway to the Caribbean region which will increase the flow of Trade & Investment between both nations. The two countries agreed to explore collaborative efforts in recruiting and facilitating the movement of skilled labour from Jamaica to India moving forward, especially in fields such as Healthcare and Education, which includes Nursing and Teaching.

Jaishankar also referred to the successful completion of the Rural Livelihoods Project (RLP) in Kitson Town of Jamaica, which was supported by India’s development assistance to the country.
