The metro flyover has seen a big milestone in Bengaluru, with the complete operationalisation of the first double-decker metro flyover at the Central Silk Board crossroad. All the five flyovers that constitute this multi-level structure are currently operational with the opening of flyover D and E which means much relief to the everyday commuters who had to pass one of the most congested traffic points in the city.
South India has the first integrated road-cum-rail flyover developed by Afcons Infrastructure as a part of the greater elevated metro corridor along the outer ring road. As a five-story building, it integrates road flyovers with metro rail, which is a high-level of engineering in a very complicated urban landscape.
The officials emphasized that it was quite difficult to build such a structure in one of the busiest crossroads in Bengaluru, as there was a lack of space, traffic flow, and several ongoing infrastructure projects. As a result of these limitations, the construction works could be performed within a small time slot of only several hours during the night and had to be thoroughly planned and carried out.
One of the main elements of the Bengaluru Metro Blue Line (Phase 2A), which includes the Silk Board to KR Puram route, is the double-decker flyover. The raised elevated line is expected to facilitate traffic and enhance connectivity between key technological and residential areas in the city.
Since all flyovers are already in service, the authorities anticipate traffic flow to be smoother, travel time to be shorter, and in the long term, the lakhs of commuters who pass through Central Silk Board crossing daily would benefit.
