A tragic road accident in Tamulpur district has claimed the life of a popular Bihu dancer and left 11 others injured after a head-on collision between a mini bus and a trailer truck on Friday night, police said. The deceased has been identified as Nishamoni Haloi, a 25-year-old artiste known for her performances in traditional Bihu dance and ‘Nagara Naam’.
The incident occurred in the Noakhata area while the troupe was travelling to perform at a nearby event. According to officials, around 30 members, including female dancers, male ‘dhulias’ (drummers), and other performers from different parts of Assam, were on board the vehicle at the time of the accident.
Police confirmed that Nishamoni Haloi died on the spot due to the impact, while 11 other members sustained injuries of varying severity. The seriously injured were rushed to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for advanced treatment, while others are being treated at a local healthcare facility.
The untimely death of the young dancer has cast a pall of gloom across the region, with many mourning the loss of a rising cultural talent. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed deep sorrow over the incident, calling it a heartbreaking loss to the state’s cultural community.
Authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the exact cause of the collision, and the victim’s body will be handed over to her family after the post-mortem examination. The incident has once again raised concerns over road safety during night travel.
