New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has given a major order to widen the main road of Shalimar Bagh village. The court has ordered the demolition of 143 houses, in which about 157 families are residing. The court has given clear instructions to the Delhi government to remove the illegal constructions to widen the road by 30 meters. The court bench has given time till May 30 to the affected families to vacate the houses. The court said in its order that road widening is necessary keeping in mind the public interest and traffic ease.

During the hearing, a bench of Justices Pratibha M. Singh and Madhu Jain heard all parties, including local residents and government departments, at length. The court found that the homeowners failed to produce valid documents to support their construction. Furthermore, other departments, including the Delhi Development Authority, proved to the court that all these houses were built illegally on government land.

The court also noted that these buildings, with five to six stories high, illegally occupy approximately 24 meters of land. In its order, the court also expressed concern over the poor condition of the area. According to the court, the road has become so narrow that even essential services like ambulances, fire brigades, and school buses cannot easily pass through, leading to frequent traffic jams. The court clarified that widening the road to 30 meters is essential to improve the situation and comply with the Delhi Master Plan 2021. In light of this, the court has ordered the demolition of the illegal constructions.

In its order, the bench stated that the illegal construction was carried out on Road No. 320 of Max Road, Shalimar Bagh Village (Haiderpur Village). This route connects to the Ring Road (Mukarba Chowk) and is a significant traffic conduit. The court noted that a survey conducted by the District Magistrate of the area identified 143 houses, inhabited by 157 families, spanning a 670-meter stretch.

A total of approximately 750 people reside in these houses. During the hearing, it was revealed that the homeowners failed to produce valid documents, while other departments, including the Delhi Development Authority, proved that these constructions were illegally constructed on government land. Many of the buildings are five to six stories high and occupy approximately 24 meters of land.
